Our Mission in Action

A Fresh Chapter: The History and Future of the Oak Park Farmers Market

The Oak Park Farmers Market has been a staple of the Oak Park community. Since its launch in 2010. The market has provided residents of Oak Park and nearby neighborhoods, including Curtis Park, Elmhurst, Mid-Town, Colonial Heights, Tahoe Park, and South Sacramento with fresh food access, and a place where friends and family can come together every Saturday.

A Leader in Food Access

From its early days, the Oak Park Farmers Market has been committed to making fresh food accessible to all, becoming one of the first farmers markets in Sacramento to accept CalFresh EBT benefits. Through this program, the market has provided more than $250,000 in EBT benefits to the community!

Thanks to a strong partnership with UC Davis Health, the market provides up to $20 in EBT matching, doubling the purchasing power for low-income shoppers and families, allowing them to buy twice as many fruits, vegetables, and locally made products.

A New Home with Food Literacy Center

Food Literacy Center has been a familiar presence at the Oak Park Farmers Market. In 2012, we launched our first Food Literacy Month celebration, raising awareness about food literacy education. By 2015, we were hosting weekly cooking classes at Oak Park Community Center’s Summer Nights, bringing hands-on food literacy education to local families. Since 2017, we’ve expanded our impact by teaching cooking and nutrition classes to elementary schools in Oak Park, including Bret Harte and Ethel Phillips.

In 2023, as the market’s former nonprofit host shifted priorities, our board of directors passed a resolution to officially onboard the Oak Park Farmers Market as a program of Food Literacy Center. This onboarding resolution bolsters our commitment of bringing fresh, local produce to local residents -because we want everyone to eat their veggies.

A Season of Growth and Community

As we kick off opening day, we celebrate the market’s vibrant community with local farmers, food artisans, and community members like you.

We invite you to join us on opening day and throughout the season as we continue to grow and nourish our community.
