Masto Khyar

This recipe is an Afghan staple, introduced to Food Literacy Center by local Afghan caterer, Florence Amin-Popalza. Cucumbers, garlic, and dill are highlighted in this refreshing recipe, which can be eaten on its own or used as a dip! It’s a perfect dish to make during spring and early summer when cucumbers are ripe and in-season.

Yield: 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain yogurt 
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled and diced 
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled and minced 
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh dill, chopped 
  • Salt & pepper to taste 

Instructions for Adults

Assist with supervision of safe knife skills and measuring.

Instructions for Kids

In a medium bowl, stir together the yogurt, cucumbers, and garlic. Add the dill, salt, and pepper. Stir together. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
